Working with Kobelco Construction Machinery keeps Jaskirat Singh pretty busy most of the week. This isn't a desk job where you sit in the AC all day. Most of the time is spent out where the big machines are sitting in the dirt. These excavators and cranes are complicated, so there is always something to look at or adjust. We deal with a lot of heavy metal parts that require two people just to lift. It gets loud and greasy very fast. I find myself explaining how the hydraulics work to people who just want the machine to start. We have manuals all over the place, but half the time we just know by the sound of the engine what is wrong. It’s not a glamorous life. My boots are ruined every few months from the oil and the rough ground. We get calls at weird hours when a machine stops on a job site. You just have to grab the tools and go. There’s no use complaining about it. The parts take forever to arrive sometimes, which makes the customers grumpy. I just tell them the truth about the delay. We don't use big words or fancy talk here. We just try to get the steel moving again. It’s honest work and it keeps the lights on. I’ve been working with heavy gear since I was much younger, so it’s second nature to me now. Jaskirat Singh is usually the one you'll see with the grease on his face.
