Jodhpur is world-famous for its handicrafts, and we are right in the middle of all that activity at Kamla Nehru Nagar. Sceptre Handicraftsprivate Limited is based out of Sector D, specifically at the address D-21. If you walk down our particular street, you’ll see plenty of workshops like ours. We focus on making things by hand, which is the old way of doing things. It’s a lot of wood and metal work, mostly. The artisans we work with have been doing this since they were young, learning the trade from their uncles and fathers. We don’t have a shiny showroom with air conditioning; it’s more about the smell of fresh sawdust and the constant sound of hammers. Sometimes things take longer than they should because handmade items can’t be rushed through a machine. If a piece of wood has a knot or a crack, we have to find a way to work around it. That’s just the nature of the material. My desk is usually covered in rough drawings and half-empty tea cups. We send our products to different places, but we stay rooted right here in Jodhpur. The 342008 area is always busy, and there’s always some kind of tempo or truck moving on the street outside. We aren't trying to be the biggest company in India. We just want to keep making things that look good and will last a long time in someone’s house. People who know the trade know where to find us. It’s a busy life, but it’s good work at the end of the day.
