You’ll find Pukhraj & Co right in the middle of the Mandor Mandi in Pipar City. Being in a mandi means our day starts much earlier than most people. We are usually here before the sun is even up, waiting for the farmers to bring in their loads. It’s a very dusty place, with trucks and tractors constantly moving around and people shouting out prices. We deal with bulk goods, so our office is mostly just a place to keep the scales and the ledger books. There are piles of sacks everywhere, and the smell of grain and earth is very strong. We’ve been doing this for years, so we know most of the people who come through the gates. It’s a lot of manual labor and haggling over the quality of the harvest. We sit on old wooden chairs and drink a lot of tea while we wait for the next load to arrive. There isn't anything fancy about how we work; it’s all about the daily trade and making sure the weights are right. When the season is busy, we hardly have time to sit down at all. During the off-season, we just spend time cleaning up the space and getting ready for the next round. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living, and it’s what my family has always known. Pipar City isn't a big place, so everyone knows where to find us and what we do.
