Stepping Stones An Institute For Infotech

Stepping Stones is an institute for infotech over in Kanwar Nagar, specifically at 195 C. It's not a huge building or a campus, just a couple of rooms in an older house. We have about ten computers set up on long wooden tables. They are second-hand machines but we keep them running okay. I spend a lot of my time fixing the cables or clearing out dust from the keyboards. My sister helps me manage the students. We mostly teach basic things like how to use a spreadsheet or typing. It’s not a high-tech lab. We have some old posters on the walls about shortcut keys that are starting to curl at the edges. The room smells a bit like ozone and old carpets. We have a small air conditioner but it makes a lot of noise, so we mostly just use the ceiling fans. Kanwar Nagar is a tight-knit place. Most of the people who come here live just a couple of streets away. We don't have any formal enrollment process. You just show up, we see if there’s a free chair, and you start. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we just sit and talk until it comes back. It’s a slow-paced way of doing things, but it works for us. We aren't looking to grow into a big chain or anything. We just like having this little spot. Sometimes we get biscuits to share during the evening classes if the rain is heavy.
