Jhotwara Road is always dusty. You can’t really help it with all the traffic and the construction work nearby. Our shop at A 214 is right in the middle of it. I spend a lot of my time looking at blueprints or checking on pieces of equipment. It’s heavy work sometimes. My hands usually have some grease or dirt on them by midday. We have a lot of tools scattered around the workbench. I try to put them back but someone always needs something else. The ceiling fan here makes a rhythmic clicking sound that I don’t even notice anymore. We get engineers and site workers coming in and out quite a bit. It’s a practical space. We don’t have fancy carpets or anything like that because they’d just get ruined in a day. There’s a tea stall just a few doors down that makes the best ginger tea, which helps during the long afternoons. Some days we stay late to finish up a specific job. The light in the back room is a bit dim, so we use a portable lamp when we need to see the fine details. It’s just how things go here. We focus on the machines and the metal. It’s honest work and it keeps us occupied from morning until late evening. Sometimes the neighbors come by to borrow a wrench and we chat for a minute before getting back to the grind.
