The door to the office has this annoying squeak that we never get around to fixing. We just put a bit of oil on it and it stays quiet for a week. Kripal Chowk is always buzzing, especially in the evenings when everyone is heading home. Our desks are covered in folders and half-empty water bottles. We don’t really bother with a cleaning crew every day, so we just sweep the floor ourselves most mornings. Jabalpur is a good place, but the traffic can really get to you. Sometimes the trucks are delayed because of the narrow roads around Gupteshwar. We just wait it out and call the drivers to see where they are. It’s not a high-tech operation. We still use a lot of carbon paper for receipts. It’s just how we’ve always done it here. We know the regular customers by their voices on the phone. It’s a small team, just four of us. We talk about the local cricket matches or what’s happening in the news while we wait for the deliveries to arrive. It’s just a normal job in a normal part of the city. We aren't trying to change the world, just trying to make sure people get their cement on time so they can finish their houses before the rains come. It's practical work that keeps us busy from morning till the sun goes down. We have a wooden bench by the door where people sometimes sit and wait for their paperwork to be ready.
