Metro Flour Mill

Metro Flour Mill is situated along the Kottayamkumily Road in Vandiperiyar. It’s a busy route with a lot of buses and trucks going past all day long. Being right on the main road means we get a lot of dust from the traffic, so we have to keep the front of the mill closed most of the time. Inside, it’s mostly the sound of the grinders. We have been here for years, and the routine hasn't changed much in all that time. We open up early, check the machines, and start on whatever grain was brought in the day before. Vandiperiyar is a beautiful place, but when you are inside a flour mill, you mostly just see the walls and the equipment. We don’t have any fancy signs or a big lobby for customers. People just come to the side door, drop off their sacks, and come back later to pick up the flour. Sometimes the machines need a bit of a push to get going on cold mornings. We handle everything ourselves, from the grinding to the basic maintenance of the motors. It’s not the quietest job in the world, and your ears might ring a bit after a long shift, but we like the work. It’s a steady way to spend the day, and we know we are doing something useful for the folks around here. We just keep the motors running.
