T.Nagar is usually known for its big clothing shops and jewelry stores, but we’re over on Sarangapani Street at number 43 doing something a bit more industrial. Indian Expeller Works (P) Ltd. has been around for quite a bit. We deal with expellers, which are heavy bits of equipment used for pressing oil out of seeds like groundnut or sunflower. Our place is more of a traditional workshop setup. It’s definitely not one of those glass-walled offices you see in the newer parts of the city. We have heavy doors and concrete floors that are built to take the weight of the machinery. Most of the guys here have been working with these types of machines for their whole lives. We talk about gears, screws, and pressure more than anything else. Sometimes the street gets a bit flooded when it rains really hard, and we have to scurry around to move things up onto blocks. It’s just how it is in this part of town. We don’t have a sales team that goes out and makes big promises to people. Most of our work comes from folks who have used our machines for decades and finally need a new one or just some spare parts. It’s a slow and steady kind of business. We take our time with the assembly because if an expeller isn't put together right, it just won't last in the field. There’s always a bit of dust and the smell of oil in the air. We stay busy.
