Out here in the Mallapur I.D.A., things are a bit more spread out. We are at Plot No. 140, which is a decent-sized piece of land. Hy-Vac Engineers is written on the gate, though it’s gotten a bit rusty over the seasons. This area is full of workshops and factories, so there’s always a hum of electricity and engines in the air. Our building is mostly corrugated metal and concrete. It gets pretty hot in the afternoons when the sun beats down on the roof. We have a couple of big fans, but they mostly just move the warm air around. There’s a lot of heavy equipment on the floor, mostly for vacuum testing and engineering stuff. It’s not a place for a suit and tie. Most of us are in work clothes that have seen better days. We have a small corner for a desk and a telephone that rings more than you’d expect. The yard outside has some old scrap metal and a few trees that don't get much water. It’s a long way from the city center, so we usually bring our lunch and eat together in the shade. It’s quiet work in a noisy neighborhood. We just keep our heads down and finish whatever project is on the bench that day. There is always something to weld or fix before we leave.
