Somenath Hardware Stores is located at Plot No- 12 on Madhusudan Pal Chowdhury Lane. We’re near the Hatakata area, which is a landmark most locals know well. The shop is a typical hardware store where you’ll find piles of pipes, buckets of nails, and rows of paint cans. It’s the kind of place where you can find a single screw if that’s all you need for a repair at home. Hardware for plumbing, basic electrical fixes, and general carpentry fills up most of the space. The lane is narrow, so if a delivery truck comes, everything else has to stop for a minute while they unload. This has been our home for a long time. The walls are covered in calendars from years ago and old posters from paint companies. We don't have fancy lights or a glass front, just a metal shutter we pull up every morning. Customers come in with broken parts of a tap or a rusted hinge, asking if there is something that will work. A lot of time is spent digging through bins to find the right size. It’s not glamorous work, but people in the neighborhood rely on us to have the basics in stock. My hands are usually a bit dirty from handling the ironmongery, but that's just part of the job. Most of our customers are known by name and we usually stop to chat while bagging up their items.
