About National Foundry & Engineering Works – Metals & Minerals in Howrah
National Foundry & Engineering Works runs out of Shed No. 66 in the Howrah Industrial Estate over in Baltikuri. Being in an industrial estate means we are surrounded by other workshops and the constant sound of hammers and engines. Our shed is where all the casting and engineering happens. It’s a hot place, especially when the furnace is going, and you won’t find many clean spots on the floor. We deal with raw metal and sand every single day. It’s heavy work and it takes a lot out of you by the time evening rolls around. We’ve got our routine down though. Some of us have been working in this shed for years and we know every corner of it. The roof leaks a little when it rains hard, but we just move the equipment out of the way. It’s not a place for people who mind getting dirty or sweaty. We take the orders as they come and try to stay on top of the casting schedule. There’s a lot of coordination needed to make sure the foundry side of things goes smoothly without any hitches. We aren't interested in making things look pretty for visitors; we just care about the metal being poured right. It’s just an old-fashioned engineering shed doing what it’s supposed to do in the middle of Baltikuri.
