Amit Ghosh

My name is Amit Ghosh and I run a small business in Boroi, which is part of Singur in the Hooghly district. It is mostly just me here, though sometimes I have a boy help out with deliveries. I do not have a big corporate sign or anything like that. People just know to come to my place in Boroi if they need something. Singur is a place with a lot of history, but my day-to-day life is quite simple. I wake up early, check what needs to be done, and open up. I deal with various goods, whatever the local people are asking for at the time. It is not a specialized shop. I just try to be useful to the neighborhood. The weather here can be very humid, so I spend a lot of time just trying to stay cool under the fan. I have lived in Hooghly my whole life, so I know almost everyone who walks through the door. We talk about the crops, the local news, or just the price of things going up. I keep my records in a thick notebook with a red cover. It is not high-tech, but it works for me. I do not think I would like working in a big city office. I like being my own boss, even if the money is not always great. It is a quiet life here in Boroi and that suits me just fine. I think it is important to stay connected to the ground.
