Living and working up here at Fort Gwalior is different from being down in the city. The Scindia School is spread out across the hill, and you definitely get your steps in just walking from one building to another. The stone walls are old and have been through a lot of weather. It’s a bit drafty in the winter months, and the wind really kicks up sometimes. We don’t really think about the history every single day because we’re too busy worrying about the mess in the dorms or if the dining hall is ready for the next meal. It’s a big place to look after. The kids are always running around the grounds, and sometimes we have to remind them to stay away from the steep edges. It’s not like a modern school with glass walls; it’s more about the old trees and the open spaces. We spend a lot of time on routine. Wake up, classes, sports, and then back to the houses. It’s a lot of management. Some of the plumbing is as old as the hills, so there’s always something that needs fixing. We just keep things moving along. It’s a quiet life up here away from the main town noise, which is probably good for everyone’s focus. We just handle the day-to-day tasks and try to keep the students out of trouble while they are away from home.
