Working out of 7A in the Maruti Industrial Area in Sector-18 means dealing with a lot of noise every day. Otie (India) Pvt. Ltd. is basically a big hall with some partitioned offices that always feel a bit too small. The walls are painted a dull cream color that has seen better days, and there are posters about safety that are starting to peel off. We spend most of the day on the phone or looking at spreadsheets, trying to figure out why the shipping was delayed or if the raw materials will arrive on time. It’s not the kind of job where you wear a suit. Most of us are in sturdy shoes because the floor can be slippery with oil or metal shavings. Lunch is usually eaten quickly at the desks or on the small bench outside near the gate. There’s a lot of back and forth between the office and the shop floor. The gate at 7A is always swinging open for some delivery or another. We’ve got a couple of old fans that make a clicking sound, which drives everyone crazy, but nobody has the time to fix them. It’s just a regular workplace where people are trying to get things done without too much fuss. We know the neighbors at the other units, and we mostly keep to ourselves unless someone needs to borrow a tool or a jump-start for a truck.
