Our place is in V.P.O. Jharsa, which is quite close to the Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bhawan. It is a landmark everyone knows around here, so it makes giving directions easy. Being in this part of Gurgaon means we are a bit away from the fancy malls and the traffic of the main roads. Koutons Retail India Ltd uses this location as a base for handling the distributions. It is a dusty area sometimes, especially when the wind picks up off the empty lots, so we are always cleaning the surfaces. The building is sturdy but it’s definitely seen better days. We have a lot of space for storage, which is useful because things can get crowded quickly when new shipments arrive. The staff mostly comes from the nearby villages or just across the district. We don’t have a big HR department or any of those corporate things. If there is a problem with a box or a shipment, we just sort it out among ourselves. The trucks come by in the morning to drop things off and we spend the rest of the day getting it all organized. It is physical work and your back might ache by the end of the shift. There is a small shop nearby where we get lunch most days. It is a basic life here, nothing like what you see in the advertisements. We just do our bit and keep the wheels turning.
