Vijaya Lakshmi Handloom

Vijaya Lakshmi Handloom is located at No. 72/1 in the Double Storey area of Govindpuri. This part of Delhi is always moving. We’ve got a small space here where we keep the handloom items. It’s not a showroom with bright lights and fancy displays. It’s more like a workshop and storage space combined. You can smell the fabric and the dye when you walk in. We spend most of our time checking the weave of the cloth and talking to the people who make them. It’s a traditional way of doing things, and it’s a lot of manual labor. My father started this many years ago, and we’ve just kept it going the same way. The building is old, and the walls have some cracks, but it’s home to us. We don't spend money on fancy advertisements. People who appreciate handloom work eventually find their way to our door in Govindpuri. Sometimes the electricity goes out for an hour or two, and we just sit outside on the steps and wait for it to come back. It’s a slow process compared to the big factories, but we don't mind that. We focus on the threads and the patterns, one piece at a time. It’s a simple business run by people who actually care about the work they’re doing with their hands.
