The sun hits Plot No. 12 pretty early since there aren't many tall buildings right next to us here in Basantpur Sainthli. Azad Mehra House Keeping Material is basically a lot of brooms, floor cleaners, and buckets stacked up high. Being near the main road in Muradnagar means there is always a layer of fine grit on everything by noon. I spend a good chunk of my morning with a cloth, just wiping down the plastic jugs of soap. It feels like a never-ending job. The shop is big enough to hold a lot of stuff, but it gets cramped when we get a new shipment in from the trucks. I usually have to move the mops to the back to make room for the heavy detergent drums. The floor is just plain cement, and it stays cool, which is nice when the heat starts picking up outside. Sometimes people stop by just to ask for directions because we are so close to the main road. I don't mind. I just point them the right way and go back to counting the brushes. The neighborhood is mostly quiet except for the heavy lorries passing by. My hands always smell like lemon or bleach, which I’ve just gotten used to over the years. By the time I close up, the streetlights are starting to flicker on, and the dust finally starts to settle down for the night.
