Working in Transport Nagar in Gandhidham-kachchh means you’re always surrounded by dust and big rigs. We are at number 55, and our office is basically a hub for drivers and a lot of paperwork. It’s not the cleanest place in the world, what with the desert wind blowing sand into every crack in the windows. Most of our day is spent tracking where the trucks are and making sure the loads are ready to go out on time. The heat in Kachchh can be brutal, especially in the middle of the day when the sun is reflecting off the metal containers in the yard. We have a couple of old chairs outside where the drivers sit and wait for their turns. There’s always a pot of tea going somewhere nearby. It’s a lot of shouting across the yard and checking logbooks that are starting to fall apart at the edges. We’ve been doing this transport thing for a long time, so we know the routes and the usual problems that come with them. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s how things get moved from point A to point B. We don’t use any fancy software, just our heads and some old notebooks. When a truck breaks down or a road is blocked, we just figure it out. That’s just life at 55 Transport Nagar. It’s busy, loud, and honest work that keeps us going through the year.
