Cement Agent

Being a Cement Agent in Gadag is a lot of phone calls and checking on shipments. Our place is at number 89, right in the heart of things in Karnataka. It is a simple setup with a couple of chairs and a ledger where we keep track of who needs what. Gadag has its own pace, and we’ve learned to move with it over the seasons. Some months are very busy when everyone is trying to finish their building work before the monsoons come, and other times it is a bit slower. I spend a lot of time talking to builders and people just trying to fix up their own front porches. You get to know a lot about people by what they are building. We don't have a big warehouse here at 89, but we manage the flow of materials from the bigger suppliers to the local sites. It can be stressful when a truck breaks down or the prices change suddenly, but that is just the nature of the trade. We’ve been here long enough that most of the local drivers know exactly where to park without us even telling them. It’s not a glamorous job, but it is honest and it keeps us involved with the growth of our town. We just try to stay organized and keep the coffee pot full for anyone who drops in. Sometimes the paperwork gets ahead of me, but I catch up eventually when the office is quiet in the evening.
