Our operation is based out of Uklana Mandi at Tejpal’s place. He is the son of Dalip Singh, and everyone around here knows the family. Being at the Mandi means we are right in the thick of it. There is always noise, the smell of grain, and people haggling over prices. We focus on legumes, so things like lentils and beans are what we deal with every day. It’s a very practical environment. We don’t have a fancy reception area or anything like that. You just walk in and you see people working. We spend a lot of time checking the quality of the pulses that the farmers bring in. Some days the bags are stacked so high you can barely see across the room. We try to keep things moving so nothing sits around for too long. The Mandi is a competitive place, and we are just one part of the bigger picture here. We help the local farmers get their legumes ready for sale and try to find the best way to group the harvests together. It involves a lot of manual labor and keeping a close eye on the scales. Sometimes the weather makes the Mandi floor a mess, especially when it rains and the mud gets tracked everywhere. We just deal with it and keep the work going. It is a very direct way of life, tied to the land and the seasons. It gets busy during the peak months but we manage.
