Ganesh Sweet

If you walk down Tipat Road near the Delhi Gate area in Sarai Khawza, you'll find us at number 17. It’s a busy part of town, always plenty of rickshaws and people moving about. We’ve been running Ganesh Sweet for a long time, and the building shows its age a little. We don’t mind. The focus is always on the back where the cooking happens. It gets hot back there, especially in the summer months when the fans just move the warm air around. We start early, around five, to get the fresh batches done. There’s something about the way the morning light hits the street that I really like. Most of our regulars live right here in the neighborhood, so we know their names and what they usually like to buy. It isn’t a polished corporate office or anything like that. It’s just a local shop with wooden benches and the smell of cardamom in the air. We keep things simple because that’s what works. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to use the old lamps, but the work doesn't stop. People still need their snacks and sweets for their tea. We just keep the trays full and the floor swept as much as we can. It’s a humble life, but it’s ours. We’ve stayed in this same spot while the rest of the Sarai Khawza area changed around us over the decades. It’s funny to think about how much has changed while we just keep making the same recipes every single day.
