Das Engineering Works

Our workshop is located at Plot Number 5 in Block C, right near Patel Chowk in SGM Nagar. It’s a part of the NIT area that’s mostly filled with small shops and other engineering places like ours. You can usually hear the sound of tools and machinery as soon as you turn onto the street. It’s a busy neighborhood where people are always fixing something or building something new. Our place isn't very large, but we’ve packed it with all the tools and benches we need to get through the day. The floor is concrete and usually has some grease or metal shavings on it, no matter how much we sweep. It’s just the nature of the work we do. We don't have a fancy office out front; we just talk to people right there on the shop floor. Sometimes it gets a bit chaotic when we have several projects going at once, but we manage to keep track of it all in our own way. We’ve been at this location for a good while, so we know the local vendors and the other guys working in the nearby plots. It’s a practical environment where we focus on the machines and the tasks at hand. There’s a lot of hard work involved, and we usually go home pretty tired, but that’s fine. It’s a decent place to be if you like staying busy and working with your hands. We keep the big doors open most of the time to get some air in, which also lets in all the noise from Patel Chowk. It’s a trade-off we’re okay with. We have a small corner with a sink to wash the grease off our hands at the end of the shift, though it never quite all comes off. Our tools are old but we take care of them because they’ve been with us since we started. It’s a simple, tough kind of work environment.
