Nehru Nagar is a quieter part of Deopur, at least compared to the main market. Our place is at No. 23 in the Municipal Colony, right on W.B. Road. It’s a bit of a residential feel here, which is nice. At Prompt Computers & Services, we usually have a pile of CPUs or laptops waiting in the corner. Someone’s keyboard stopped working, or a screen got cracked—that’s the usual stuff we see. It’s a small shop, so when three people come in at once, it feels very full. We have a couple of workbenches with soldering irons and screwdrivers scattered around. My hands are usually covered in some kind of grey dust from cleaning out old fans. The Nehru Nagar area is easy to find, right near the colony gate. We know most of the neighbors, and sometimes they just stop by to ask a quick question about their phone or internet. It’s not a fancy corporate service center with a numbering system. You just walk in and tell us what’s wrong. Sometimes a repair takes longer than we thought because we have to wait for a part to come from out of town. We just do our best with what we have. The tea shop next door keeps us going during the long afternoons. It’s a steady kind of life, fixing one machine after another until it’s time to close up. We usually shut the doors around seven, once the street lights come on and the colony gets quiet.
