Down here in Village Sahiya Garh, near the Takia post office in Deoria, things move at their own pace. We are part of the local landscape, sitting right in the middle of this rural stretch of Uttar Pradesh. Our work involves a lot of handling goods and looking after things that come in from the fields. It’s not an office job where you sit in a suit all day. Most of us are used to the dust and the way the seasons change the work we do. The building is functional, built for storage and moving items around rather than looking pretty for visitors. We spend a lot of time checking on the stock and making sure everything is where it should be. The road out front can get quite muddy when the rains come, making it a bit of a challenge for the trucks. We know the farmers around here and the people who pass through on their way to the main town. It’s a lot of manual work and keeping track of numbers on paper. We don’t have any big signs or fancy decorations. It is just a workspace where we get the job done. Sometimes we sit outside during the break and just watch the activity in the village. It’s a quiet existence compared to the city, but there is always plenty to keep us busy from sunrise to sunset. We keep our logs in big heavy books that sit on a wooden desk that's seen better days.
