About Assam Tea Company – Food & Beverages in Darjeeling
We’ve been here on Sahajana Road in Shayam Ganj for quite a while now. Most mornings start early, usually before the sun is even fully up, because that’s when the first crates of tea show up. It’s noisy and a bit chaotic at times, but it’s just how things go at Assam Tea Company. People around here know the building, it isn't much to look at, just a practical space where we handle the bags and make sure everything is sorted right. We deal with a lot of different leaves, mostly stuff brought in from the bigger estates. It gets dusty, and the smell of dry tea is always stuck in our clothes by the end of the day. My hands are usually stained a bit dark from touching the leaves all afternoon. We don’t have a fancy showroom or anything like that. It’s mostly just us working in the back, checking the quality and getting things ready for whoever needs a bulk order. Shayam Ganj is a busy area, so there’s always traffic outside our door, trucks honking and people rushing by. We just stay focused on what’s in front of us. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to sit around waiting for it to come back on, just chatting and drinking whatever tea is handy. It’s a simple way to make a living, but it keeps us busy. We know most of the regular drivers and the neighbors by name. It’s just a normal workplace.
