Ashoka Handloom Arts

Our place is over in Sukrawarpet at number 202. If you know where the Basuvannan Koil Temple is, we’re right near there. It’s a traditional area, and we fit right in with the handloom work we do. The shop is often filled with the sound of the looms and the smell of thread. We’ve been here for quite some time, and the neighborhood knows us well. It’s not a big corporate setup. It’s more of a family-style environment where everyone knows their job. We spend a lot of time on the details of the weaving. Sometimes the lighting isn't the best in the old building, but we make it work. Sukrawarpet is a busy place with lots of small businesses like ours. We don’t really do any big advertising. People usually find us because they’re visiting the temple or they live nearby. The shelves are usually stacked high with whatever we’ve been working on lately. It’s a bit cramped inside with all the materials, but that’s just how it is with handloom work. We enjoy the process, even when it’s slow. It’s a quiet kind of labor compared to the noisy shops down the street. We’re just local people making things by hand. If you’re around the temple, you might see us through the door working away. It’s a simple life and a simple business, and we've been at this spot for as long as I can remember. It suits the way we work and the people we serve.
