E L Shaddai Florist is located over at 6/12 on 19th Street in Tansi Nagar. It’s a nice little corner of Velacheri. We spend our days surrounded by flowers and plants, which isn't a bad way to live. The shop smells like wet earth and lilies most of the time. We aren't one of those high-end boutiques; we're just a local florist shop. People come in when they have a wedding or maybe when someone has passed away. It’s a lot of cutting stems and tying ribbons. We get our stock in early from the markets and then spend the morning sorting through everything. 19th Street is usually quiet enough that we can work without too much noise. We don't have a big corporate structure or anything like that. It’s just us here, making bouquets and helping neighbors find something green for their porch. Sometimes the thorns prick our fingers, but that’s just part of the job. Velacheri has grown a lot, but Tansi Nagar still feels like a community. We like being part of that. We don't spend much on ads because people just walk by and see the buckets of color outside. It’s a simple business, really. We just keep the water fresh and the petals trimmed as best we can. That’s what we do every day. Sometimes we have a lot of leaves on the floor, but we sweep up before we go home.
