Our place is on Seven Wells Street over in Parrys. If you know where the Murugan Theatre is, we are right around there. The building is an old one, with the address being New No 38 and Old No 102. That’s how it is with many spots in this part of Chennai. It’s a very busy area with a lot of shops and people moving goods around all day long. Inside the salon, we have some old-style chairs and large mirrors that have been there for years. We do simple haircuts and shaves for the people who work in the market or live in the narrow lanes nearby. There is always a lot of noise from the street, but inside it feels a bit different. We have the combs sitting in jars and the towels stacked up near the back. We spend a lot of time just chatting with the regulars who have been coming to us for a long time. The floor is a bit worn down, but we keep it swept. It’s not a place where you’ll find anything too modern, just the honest tools of the trade. We open early because Parrys starts its day before most of the city. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot, but the way we do a haircut hasn’t changed much at all. We just keep our heads down and do the work until it’s time to go home. It’s a simple life on a very crowded street.
