Bharat Bricks Co

Down in Village Fatehpur Behra, things get a bit dusty at Bharat Bricks Co. Being in Dera Bassi, we are right in the thick of the brick-making area. Our yard is usually full of stacks, and there’s always a tractor or a truck coming in or going out. It is hard work, mostly outdoor stuff. We spend our days watching the weather and making sure the bricks are drying right before they go into the kiln. My hands are usually a bit dirty by lunch time, and that is just part of the job. It’s a local operation, and most of the guys working here live nearby in the village. We don't have a big corporate office; just a small room where we keep the ledgers and answer the phone when it rings. Sometimes the rain slows everything down, which can be a real headache, but you just deal with it. People from the surrounding areas come by when they are building a new wall or a house and need a load of bricks. We just count them out and help them load up. It’s straightforward work without any complicated nonsense. The sun can be quite hot out here in the open, but we have some shade near the main entrance. It’s a loud place too, with all the machinery and the clinking of the baked clay.
