You will find us in the village of Haatkalyani, which is in the Tharali area of Chamoli. Our main contact is Mahipalsingh, and he lives over in Dewal. Rupkund Fed Farmers Producer Company Limited is our collective. We chose the name because Rupkund is a famous part of our region and it makes us feel connected to our roots. Farming in Chamoli is different than in the plains because of the altitude and the hills. We grow local varieties that have been here for a long time. It is a lot of walking and heavy lifting because machines can't always get to our fields. We started this producer company so we could help each other out with things like seeds and transport. Usually, we meet up in Haatkalyani to discuss what we need for the month. There is no big office with computers or secretaries. We just use a simple notebook to keep track of things. Life in the mountains is quiet and we like it that way. We are just a group of neighbors who have known each other our whole lives. We want to make sure our kids can still farm this land if they want to. It’s about survival and keeping our community together more than anything else. We just do our best with what we have.
