The shop is over in H-52 Gh Colony, right along the Devli Road. If you know Sangam Vihar, you know how busy it gets with all the traffic and people moving about. We do a lot of welding here, mostly iron gates, window grills, and frames that people need for their houses. The sound of the grinder is basically the background music of my life. It gets really hot in the summer months because of the torches and the metal absorbing all that Delhi sun. We have some space out front where we lean the finished pieces against the wall. Sometimes the sparks fly and you have to be careful about your clothes getting little burn holes in them. It’s a messy job, but someone has to do it. My family has lived around here for years, so we know the neighbors well. Often, someone just stops by to ask if we can fix a broken hinge or weld a small piece of furniture back together. We don't have a big office or anything like that, just the workshop floor and a few benches where we keep our tools. The floors are always covered in metal shavings and dust, no matter how much we sweep. It’s hard work, and my back usually aches by the end of the day, but seeing a finished gate ready to go out makes it feel alright. We usually keep working until the sun goes down and then we just lock the gate and head home.
