Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited

Our place is in Kalyani, near Gopalpur in the Balasore district. It’s a bit of a trek to get out here, but Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited has been part of the landscape for a while. Being in Orissa, we deal with a lot of rain and a lot of heat, sometimes in the same day. The site is mostly about iron and steel, so it’s a rugged environment. We don’t wear suits here; it’s all boots and hard hats because that’s what the job calls for. We’re right by the road, so there’s always trucks moving in and out, carrying materials. It gets quite loud with all the heavy machinery, but you get used to it after a week or two. We have workers from all over the area, and we mostly just focus on hitting our daily targets without too much fuss. There’s a lot of red dust everywhere, which is typical for an iron plant. We spend our days checking the furnaces and making sure the production line doesn’t stop. It’s a long day’s work, and by the time we finish, everyone is pretty tired. We just want to do a good job and head home to our families. It’s a practical, hardworking atmosphere where nobody expects things to be perfect, just functional. Sometimes we sit by the gate at the end of the shift just to watch the sunset over the stacks. It’s a quiet moment in a very loud place.
