Chandrayya Rice Mill

Our mill is located at 2369 Bank Road in Ankalgi. It’s a fairly small operation compared to some of the others, but we stay busy enough. The building is an old one made of brick and stone. Inside, the main space is taken up by the milling equipment. We mostly process rice for the local families and small shops in the village. It’s a noisy environment, but we’ve all grown used to the sound of the huller over the years. We don't have many employees, just a few local guys who know the machines inside and out. We spend a lot of time on the floor, bagging the rice and weighing it on the old mechanical scales. Everything is recorded in a simple diary we keep on a small table near the door. The yard outside is often filled with drying paddy when the sun is out. We have to watch the clouds and hurry to cover everything if it looks like rain. It’s a life that depends a lot on the weather and the seasons. We don't have any big business plans or fancy titles. We just call each other by name and get the work done. The dust is everywhere, but that’s just part of being in a mill. We take pride in just keeping the business going year after year without making any big fuss about it.
