Our shop is right on Custom Road in Banswara. It is a family business named after us, and we have been in this exact location for many years. If you know the Banswara area, you know that Custom Road is a main part of the town and it gets very busy, especially during the wedding season. We deal in gold and silver, following the traditions our family has kept for a long time. It is a small shop with a traditional sitting area where we talk to our customers face to face. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of ceiling fans that spin all day to keep the heat away. We spend our time weighing pieces of jewelry and checking the purity of the metal. We don't have those modern, brightly lit displays like you see in the malls. We keep our items in the safe and bring them out one by one when someone wants to see something. It feels more personal and honest that way. People come to us from the surrounding villages because they knew our fathers and grandfathers. We know most of our customers by their names and we ask about their families while we work. It is a steady, slow kind of life, and we make sure the scales are always balanced. We stay open until late and then head home.
