We are out in West Bengal, specifically in a village called Chhandar. If you are coming our way, you have to go via Beliatore in the Bankura district. It’s a bit of a trek to get here but it is a good place to work. Swarup Raj Bandyopadhyay is the main person around the office at the post office area. We do engineering work which involves a lot of planning and looking at equipment. Being in a rural spot like this means we have to be a bit more self-reliant than folks in the big cities. The power goes out once in a while but we just work around it. Our team is mostly local people who know the area well. It’s a private limited company but it doesn’t feel like a big corporation. It feels like a local shop where we happen to do complex engineering projects. The air is better out here than in Kolkata, though the roads can be a bit bumpy after the monsoon. We have some sheds for the gear and a small office space for the paperwork. We don’t have any fancy mission statements on the walls. We just have a calendar and a list of things that need to be finished by the end of the month. It’s straightforward work and we like it that way. Most of the time we are just busy with our tools and drawings.
