Our yard is out at 124 Balkundi Road in the Herur area of Ilkal. This part of the country is known for stone, so it’s no surprise that’s what we do. We spend all day cutting and moving granite blocks. It’s noisy work, and the sound of the saws is something you never really get used to. We’ve got a small shed where we keep the finished pieces away from the rain. The ground is always covered in stone dust, no matter how much we sweep it. We are just a small group of guys who have lived in Ilkal our whole lives. We don't have any fancy degrees; we just know how to handle the stone. Some of the equipment we use is pretty old, but it still works if you know how to kick it in the right spot. We don't have a big marketing budget or anything. People see the slabs out front and stop their trucks to ask about prices. The sun is really harsh out here on the road, so we try to do the heaviest lifting early in the morning. It’s a tough way to make a living, but it’s what we know. We just stay here on Balkundi Road and keep the machines running as long as there is work to do. Sometimes the dust gets in your throat, but you just drink some water and keep going.
