Being right on the Aurangabad Nashik Bombay Highway means we see a lot of trucks and cars passing by all day long. It’s a bit noisy at the 16Km mark near Maliwada, but you get used to the sound of the traffic after a week or two. The school building stands out against the dusty landscape of this part of Maharashtra. We’ve got kids coming in from all the small settlements around Aurangabad, and the morning drop-off is always a bit chaotic with the highway right there. Inside the gates, it’s a different story. We try to keep things calm, though that’s hard when the wind blows the dust in through the windows. The classrooms are basic, just desks and boards, but they do the job. We have a small office where we keep all the records in big steel cupboards. Sometimes the power goes out in the afternoon, and we just open all the doors to let the breeze through. The teachers here are mostly local people who understand what it's like growing up in this area. We don’t have fancy gadgets, just the usual stuff you need for a school. Lunchtime is the loudest part of the day, with everyone opening their tiffins at once. It’s a lot of work keeping a school running this far out, but we’ve been at it for years and it’s just our daily life now.
