A. M. Grinder

Working near the railway crossing on Tarntaran Road means there is always noise. You get used to the sound of the trains passing by after a while. A. M. Grinder is right here near the 132 Feet Ring Road, so the traffic never really stops either. The air is usually a bit thick with dust from the grinding work we do. It’s a practical kind of place. We spend most of our time at the machines or moving heavy parts around the floor. The workshop isn't exactly tidy, but that's how it goes when you’re working with metal and tools all day. Sometimes we have to shout over the machines just to hear each other. We’ve been at this spot for a good bit of time now. Most of the people who come here are locals who need something fixed or sharpened. We don't have a big office or a waiting room with AC. It’s just the shop floor and the tools. My hands are usually greasy by noon, and the tea we get from the stall nearby is what keeps us going. We just focus on the job at hand. If a machine breaks down, we fix it. If a customer brings something in, we look at it. It’s simple, honest work that doesn't need a lot of talk. The crossing gate goes up and down, and we just keep the grinders running until it’s time to lock up and go home.
