Pathanapuram Road is where we spend most of our daylight hours. Being in Kayamkulam, the weather is usually humid, so we have to be careful with how we store the food items. We have a small team here at Bharanikkavu. Most of them live nearby and walk to work. We start the machines early in the morning before it gets too hot to breathe. There’s always the sound of packing tape and the hum of the refrigerators in the background. We handle a lot of traditional snacks and items people use in their kitchens every day. Sometimes the power goes out, and we all have to scramble to get the generator running. It’s just one of those things you deal with when you run a business in a place like this. We don’t really do much advertising. People mostly find out about us because they saw our crates on a delivery truck or heard someone talking at the market. The floors need sweeping twice a day because of all the foot traffic. We keep the doors open to catch whatever breeze comes off the road. It’s a bit noisy with the buses passing by, but we don’t mind. We focus on getting the orders ready and making sure the labels are stuck on straight, even if our hands are tired by five o'clock. It is just a regular job at 1258, and we do it as best as we can.
