Govind Batteris is tucked away at number 46 in Khailand Market. If you walk past, you'll probably see a lot of heavy black plastic casings stacked on the floor. It smells like metal and old lead in here, which I don’t even notice anymore after all these years. We deal with batteries for cars and those big ones people use for their home inverters when the power cuts out. It’s heavy work, moving those things around. My back usually aches by the time we close up the shop in the evening. The floor has a few stains from where the distilled water spilled over the years. We have a small table in the corner where we test things with a meter to see if they still hold a charge. It’s not very organized, there are wires and tools lying around most of the time. The market is always loud with people shouting and horns honking, but inside it’s just the hum of the chargers. We drink a lot of water because it gets hot with all that lead and plastic around. Sometimes a customer comes in upset because their car won't start, and we just have to find them the right fit from the shelf. It’s straightforward work. We don't have any fancy displays or bright lights. Just the shelves and the heavy lifting. That's what we do every day at Khailand Market. It’s a busy life but we are used to the routine.
