Deepak Chalni Wala

Deepak Chalni Wala is situated at Madar Gate in the Mundari Mohhalla area. We specialize in chalnis, which are the sieves people use for flour and grain. It is a very old type of business and we have been doing it the same way for a long time. The shop is filled with different sizes of wire mesh and metal rims. We spend our days cutting the mesh and fitting it into the frames. It’s hard on the hands because the wire can be sharp and the metal is tough to bend sometimes. Mundari Mohhalla is an old part of the city with very narrow lanes. You can’t really get a car down here, so everything comes in on carts or by hand. We also sell some other kitchen items made of metal, but the sieves are what we are known for. People from all over the district come here when they need a good, sturdy chalni that won't break after a few months. The walls are bare and the floor is just cement. We don't have any fancy displays, the products are just stacked up against the walls. It’s a simple trade that hasn't changed much in fifty years. We just keep the shop open and wait for the regulars to come by. It is honest work and it keeps the kitchen fires burning for us. Often, we are sitting on the floor while we work because it’s easier to hold the metal pieces that way. It’s just how we have always done it here.
