About Sahkar Pottery Works – Art & Craft in Ahmedabad
We are based out of Plot No. 162 and 163 in Phase-Ii of the Naroda G.I.D.C. Estate. Working at Sahkar Pottery Works means dealing with a lot of clay and heat every single day. Our space in the Gidc is more of a factory than a studio. We have large kilns that run for hours and racks filled with ceramic pieces waiting to dry. It gets quite warm in here, especially when the ovens are fired up. The floors are almost always covered in dried clay dust, no matter how much we sweep at the end of the shift. We produce a lot of items, so there’s always a rhythm of molding, drying, and firing going on. It’s not an artistic retreat; it’s an industrial pottery setup where we focus on getting the work done right. The G.I.D.C. area is full of other factories, so there's a lot of truck movement and noise throughout the day. We’ve been in Phase-Ii for quite some time, and we’ve gotten used to the industrial pace. Sometimes a batch doesn’t come out right and we have to start over, which is frustrating but part of the process. We don't have a fancy catalog or a showroom with soft lighting. People who need pottery in bulk usually find their way to our plots by the estate road. It’s just us, the clay, and the heat. We keep things moving and try to stay on top of the production schedule every week.
