About Bharat Wooden Handicraft – Art & Craft in Ahmedabad
Our workshop is at 13, Ghanshyam Tenament, which is part of the Daxini Society in Maninagar. It’s a bit unusual because it’s a residential-style building, but we’ve turned it into our base for Bharat Wooden Handicraft. The ground floor is where all the wood gets delivered and stored. You can always smell sawdust as soon as you walk through the gate. It gets into your clothes and hair, but we don't mind it much. The neighbors are used to the sound of sanding and cutting by now. We try to keep the noise down in the early mornings and late at night. The space is a bit cramped with all the benches and tools scattered around. We have a small area upstairs where we do the finishing work and keep the finished pieces on old racks. It’s not a fancy factory, just a place where we work with our hands every day. Sometimes the rain leaks in through the back door, so we have to move the wood quickly. The society is quiet for the most part, which is nice. We have a small desk near the window where we handle the orders and talk to people who drop by. We’ve got an old radio that plays local stations all day long, mostly just to drown out the noise of the traffic from the main road. The stairs are starting to creak a bit, but we are used to it. It’s a very hands-on kind of business and we’ve been here for years.
