Operating a lab like ours at Plot No. 55/3, Phase-1 in GIDC, Vatva, is a bit different from the heavy manufacturing shops around us. While our neighbors are banging on metal, we are usually huddled over glass tubes and testing equipment. It is a lot quieter inside our doors, though you can still hear the trucks rumbling by outside on the main Vatva roads. We have to keep things pretty clean, which is a challenge in an industrial estate, so we spend a lot of time wiping down surfaces and checking the filters. The people working here have a lot of patience. Lab work is mostly about waiting for reactions or checking numbers over and over again. It is not exactly exciting to watch, but it is important for what we do. We don't have a fancy lobby or a bunch of awards on the wall. We just have our benches, our chemicals, and a small fridge for our lunch boxes. The electricity fluctuates sometimes, so we have to be careful with the sensitive instruments. We have been at this location for a while now and we know the routine of the area, like when the tea seller comes around or when the traffic gets bad in the evening. It is just a practical place to do our work and we don't try to make it seem like more than it is. We just focus on the science and the samples.
