Ambica Furniture is right at Plot No. 51/1 in the Gidc area, not too far from the Odhav Fire Station. You can usually hear us before you see us because of the saws and the sanding machines running all day. The air is always full of that woody smell, which I actually quite like. We make all kinds of things—cupboards, tables, and those heavy wooden chairs that last forever. It’s a messy job, and we all go home covered in sawdust every evening. Being near the fire station is a good landmark for when people are trying to find the workshop for the first time. We don't have a big showroom with lights and carpets. Most of our stuff is just stacked up in the back waiting to be picked up. We use a lot of local wood and some ply when the customer wants something lighter. The glue we use is pretty sticky and gets on everything, even the telephone. We don't really do any advertising. Most people hear about us from their neighbors or friends. We just try to make things that won't fall apart after a year. Some days the machines break down and we have to fix them ourselves with whatever tools we have handy. It’s hard work on your back and your hands, but seeing a finished wardrobe is a good feeling. It's a living and we're used to the dust by now.
