It is a scenic part of the region, but we are usually too busy to spend much time looking at the views. Our work is all about the poultry, from the time we arrive until we lock up at night. The air here carries the scent of the nearby coast sometimes, though mostly it smells like the farm. We aren't some massive company with a bunch of managers in suits. It’s just a few of us making sure the birds are fed and the place stays in decent shape. Dealing with livestock means there are no real days off, and the work can be quite repetitive. We track the bags of feed and watch the birds grow, which is a slow but steady process. Being at Hari Krishna Sahu’s gives the business a very local, personal feel that you don’t get with bigger outfits. People from the surrounding villages know us and stop by now and then to chat. We don't use any complicated systems, just pen and paper and a lot of manual labor. It's an honest way to make a living in a quiet part of Orissa, and we’re content with how things are going. We just keep to our routine and get the birds ready.
