Nikuphu Farmer Producer Company Limited is based in Zunheboto. We are over at the Sadar Block, specifically at Kughavi Yeptho’s place. Zunheboto is a rugged place, and the farming reflects that. We are a collection of farmers from this area who decided it was time to organize. It’s not a fancy setup. We meet in a simple room to talk about our harvests and the challenges we face with the terrain. Life here is mostly about the land and what it gives us. We don't have a marketing department or a PR person. If you want to know about us, you just look at what we are growing in the fields. We deal with all kinds of things, from erratic weather to the difficulty of getting our goods to the bigger markets. Being a producer company means we can share the costs of transport and seeds, which helps a lot. It’s practical and it’s necessary for us to survive as small farmers. We aren't polished and we don't pretend to be. We are just local people trying to make a go of it. Sometimes the meetings go on for a long time because everyone has an opinion, but that’s just how it works here. We keep our records by hand mostly and try to stay on top of things. It’s hard work, but it is our work. We just keep moving forward, one season after another, without making a big fuss about it.
