J. K. Marble

J. K. Marble is situated on Govind Puri Road in Jagadhari. If you drive down that road, you can’t miss the big blocks of stone sitting out in the open. It’s a dusty yard, and we spend a lot of time with the water hose cleaning off the slabs so people can see the real colors. Marble is heavy, so we have a small crane that hums quite loudly when it's running. My shoes are always white from the marble dust. We have a small cabin where we keep the records and where I sit when the sun gets too hot. It’s got a small window that looks out over the whole lot. People come from all over Jagadhari looking for stuff for their new houses. We don't use any fancy sales talk. We just show them what we have on the lot that day. Sometimes a shipment comes in and it’s exactly what someone wanted, other times we have to wait weeks for the right stone. The coffee shop across the road brings us snacks sometimes. It’s a hard job, lifting and moving stone, but we’ve been doing it a long time. The gates are old and squeak when we open them in the morning. It’s just us working with stone every day. It isn't glamorous but it’s what we know. We close up when it gets dark because the yard lighting isn't very good for seeing the grain.
