Store Keeper

I’m down here in Eluru at Jayaprakash Nagar, right beside Bavisetti Vari Pet. My father is K. Jangamaiah, and I’ve been handling the Store Keeper work for a while now. The weather in West Godavari can get really hot, so the afternoons are usually pretty quiet when everyone is staying indoors. I spend that time reorganizing the back area. It’s a lot of manual labor, moving sacks and boxes from one side to the other. Sometimes the neighbors come by to chat while I’m working, which slows things down but it’s part of living here. The shop is located in a spot that most people know, so I don't have to explain directions much. I keep a simple logbook for everything that comes in and goes out. Sometimes I make a mistake and have to cross things out and start the page over. My hands get calloused from the heavy lifting, but I don't mind it. It’s a basic routine. I open up early, sweep the front, and then start checking the inventory. There’s always something that needs fixing or moving. It’s not a complicated business, just a lot of staying on your feet and making sure things don't get messy. The evenings are better when it cools off and more people are out on the street. I stay until the light goes down, then lock up and head home to eat dinner with my family and start again tomorrow.
