Sivalayam Street in Chagallu is where we spend our days. Our number is 1-1-8/1, right in the Kalavalapalli area. You can usually smell the spices before you even reach the door. It’s a heavy, warm scent that stays on your clothes. We work with a lot of different growers around here to get the horticulture and spices side of things sorted. It’s a lot of sorting, grading, and packing. The building is old but it works for what we need. We don’t have air conditioning, so we keep the windows open and hope for a breeze. Sometimes the street gets blocked by carts or trucks, and everyone has to shout to be heard over the noise. It’s a lively place to work. We aren't doing anything fancy; we’re just handling the stuff that grows in the ground around this part of the country. A lot of the work is done by hand, checking the quality of the chilies or the turmeric. We spend a lot of time on the phone or talking to people who walk in off the street. It’s a bit chaotic at times, especially during the peak harvest weeks. We just try to keep up with the flow of produce coming in from the farms. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from dawn till dusk.
